1. Welcome – Intro to Back Attacks

00:43

This course aims to overview the core concepts and techniques for taking the back, maintaining back control, and finishing from the back. The purpose of the course is to provide you with a foundation on which to build a more nuanced back-attack game in the future. There is a lot of information on attacking the back in No-Gi BJJ… here’s what you need to know to have more success in training and competition.

2. New Understanding: The Importance of Back Attacks

01:38

In grappling sports, there is no better position than back control. When you’re behind your opponent, you’re able to maintain control, stay safe, and wage your own attacks while your opponent can really only focus on defending and trying to escape. This course will teach you how to punish your opponents for giving you even the slightest bit of back exposure.

3. Principles of Back Control

06:37

The three preliminary principles of back control are: having your chest connected to your opponent’s back, having your hips above your opponent’s hips, and having your head and your choking arm on opposite sides of your opponent’s head. The secondary set of principles of back control are: having your elbows deep and tight (seatbelt vs double-under control) and having active leg hooks (regular hooks, modified hooks, or body triangle).

4. Strong and Weak Sides Explained

02:33

There are situations where, if your opponent is defending correctly, you may want to voluntarily switch from back control on the strong side to the weak side. For you to make this transition, you’ll have to move your underhook to the other side, change your head positioning, and hip-escape to ensure that you have optimal control.

5. Switching from Strong Side to Weak Side

01:38

There are situations where, if your opponent is defending correctly, you may want to voluntarily switch from back control on the strong side to the weak side. 6. Grip Hierarchies from Back Control

04:02

The grips you choose, once you have the back, will determine the level of control you maintain and the types of attacks you can employ. The seatbelt grip offers you the best combination of control and offensive ability. More specifically, cross-grips should be at the top of your grip hierarchy.

“The teacher, Corey, is simply excellent”

Since the pandemic started, several gyms had to close, including the ones where I train. Being a beginner (white belt), I was looking for online jiu jitsu courses that would vulgarize many key concepts, fundamentals, and techniques of jiu jitsu. I hit the jackpot with this course! The teacher, Corey, is simply excellent. He explains back takes so well in a step-by-step approach. In addition, I strongly believe that a higher level student would also appreciate this course because the teacher adds several interesting key elements that allow you to perfect your jiu jitsu game and take your jiu jitsu to another level. It will also give you a good game plan for when you’ll be back on the mats! Therefore, I highly recommend this course, and I can’t wait to see what other courses Corey offers. Thank you!
